Tracy and Dr. Spencer discuss pelvic congestion, pelvic pain, considerations of vascular health in pregnancy and postpartum, and so much more!

Dr. Spencer has been treating complex venous disease for 20 years, and she discusses her current research investigations to develop a better understanding of pelvic venous disease and chronic pelvic pain in women. She also answers common patient questions like:

  • Why has no one ever mentioned this to me before? 
  • How can vein problems in the pelvic cause seemingly unrelated symptoms like bloating, bladder and urinary issues, headaches and postural tachycardia (elevated HR with standing and passing out)? 
  • Can I get pregnant after I have a stent placed?

What You Will Learn:

Vein problems in the pelvis often cause chronic pain and many other symptoms.

Some of the symptoms we dive into include:⁣
  • Common Symptoms of Pelvic Venous Disease Chronic: pelvic pain, pressure, or heaviness with or without (*may be other diagnoses instead as well)
  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic pain, vaginal pain, groin pain, leg pain, or back pain
  • Dilated leg or pelvic varices (varicose veins)
  • Painful intercourse or bleeding after intercourse
  • Unexplained urinary urgency, frequency, or sensation of incomplete bladder emptying
  • Heavy and/or painful periods
  • Pain with ovulation
  • Continued leg swelling and symptoms after superficial vein treatments
  • A feeling of physical anxiety in the chest when one does not feel mentally anxious (mipscenter.com)

Tracy Sher, PT, DPT, CSCS - Your Host

Tracy Sher is a pelvic physical therapist and is the founder of Pelvic Guru, Pelvic Guru Academy, and the Global Pelvic Health Alliance Membership. She is also an instructor for Pelvic Guru Academy, teaching Pudendal Neuralgia and Complex Pelvic Pain Solutions. 

Brooke Spencer, MD, FSIR

E. Brooke Spencer, MD, FSIR, attended medical school at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, performed her internship in General Surgery at University of North Carolina and completed her residency at Duke University Medical Center. Following residency, she completed an Interventional Radiology Fellowship at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis, Missouri.  
Dr. Spencer has been treating complex venous disease for 20 years. She has performed more than 1000 IVC iliac vein reconstructions, over 1000 femoral popliteal venous recanalizations, 3000 vein ablation and superficial vein treatments and placed over 4000 venous stents. Her passion for the treatment of venous disease has extended into current research investigations to develop a better understanding of pelvic venous disease and chronic pelvic pain in women. 
After 2 long experiences 8 years and 9 year respectively in large radiology groups, starting and running clinical practices in each respectively she founded an independent clinical IR practice Minimally Invasive Procedure Specialists in 2018. In 3 years, the practice has grown to 30 employees and includes a clinic with 3 Nps and 3 MDs, an outpatient office based interventional lab and coverage of a hospital service where she serves as Medical Director of Interventional Radiology. 
She has been the principal investigator on several research projects, has multiple publications, and is a dedicated educator, speaking at society meetings across the country.  
Dr. Spencer has been president of the Western Angiographic and Interventional Society and serves for the Society of Interventional Radiology. She was a founding member of a non-profit organization called the Interventional Initiative. Dr. Spencer was featured in the first episode of the documentary series titled Without a Scalpel. She has received recognition as “Best Doctor” in the Denver Business Journal and has been voted into Fellowship of the Society of Interventional Radiology for her contributions in the field.
