What can I expect?

Tracy Sher and Terri Robertson Elder discuss incorporating pessary fitting into the US scope of pelvic therapy practice. APTA’s Academy of Pelvic Health released a position statement at the end of 2021 that got the ball rolling on expanding US scope of practice in regards to pessaries.

Topics covered include:

  • Pessary overview including the historical background and scope of use both internationally and in the US
  • Pessary indications such as: POP, SUI, incompetent cervix, assessing if POP is masking SUI preoperatively to determine if a sling may be needed
  • Types of pessaries and factors to consider in pessary selection
  • Precautions/Contraindications to pessary use
  • Risks/complications with pessary use
